Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (D-MD) voted to create or save over one million jobs, extend unemployment benefits, and close tax loopholes that reward companies for outsourcing American jobs. The bill, the "American Jobs, Closing Tax Loopholes and Preventing Outsourcing Act," passed the House 245-171. The legislation also will provide resources to support over 350,000 jobs for youth ages 16 to 21 through summer employment programs. This age group has some of the highest unemployment levels, 25% for those aged 16 to 24. The funding will allow local Workforce Investment Boards to expand successful summer jobs programs funded in the Recovery Act.

"It is our responsibility to foster job creation for the American people," said Congresswoman Edwards. "That is why this legislation invests in summer jobs for our nation's youth, provides tax cuts for our working families, and invests in Build American Bonds to further economic recovery. These measures are sure-fire job creators. But this bill saves jobs also. Closing corporate tax loopholes to prevent big corporations from receiving tax breaks for shipping American jobs overseas, ensuring that good jobs remain American jobs.

"This bill is also about helping those who are out of work through no fault of their own. Extending unemployment benefits will provide needed and immediate relief to struggling Marylanders who have lost, or are on the verge of losing, their unemployment benefits, while stimulating our local economy. Families receiving these benefits will be able to afford daily necessities, while putting money back into the economy by buying groceries, filling their cars with gas, and paying their utility bills."
